Sound Blending Books

Congratulations! Your child has started to bring home a Sound Blending Book to share with you!

The information here will help you to support your child in making steady progress with their reading.

In our school, children read each Read Write Inc. Sound Blending Book numerous times.  Re-reading the same text helps children to become confident readers. Each time they re-read, they build their speed and confidence.  They love reading and want to read because they can read the words.  They have bought the Sound Blending Book home to practise reading simple words using sounds we have taught in class.

Encourage your child to share their enjoyment of the book with you.  If they hesitate over a sound or word, remind them to read the word using ‘Fred Talk, read the word’. For example, this means they say the sounds individually, then blend the sounds together to read the whole word e.g. ‘p-e-g'  'peg’.  Please support your child looking through the sounds first, then say the sounds and let your child try and say the word.  If they are struggling say the sounds together slowly, and then a second time quicker followed by the word.  Then turn the page to reveal the picture.

Moving On
In order to move onto Ditty Sheets your child needs to confidently know all Set 1 sounds (m,a,s,d,t,i,p,n,g,o,c,k,u,b,f,e,l,h,r,j,v,w,y,z,x) and read simple words containing these sounds using Fred Talk, e.g. c-o-t, cot.
